What Does an NDIS Support Coordinator Do? A Complete Guide

If you have recently received an NDIS plan, or you are supporting someone who has , you may have noticed Support Coordination listed as a funded support.

But what does a Support Coordinator actually do? And how can they help you get the most out of your NDIS plan?

This guide explains what Support Coordination involves, who it is for, and how to choose the right coordinator for your needs.

What Is NDIS Support Coordination?

Support Coordination is a capacity-building support funded through an NDIS plan. Its purpose is to help participants understand their plan, connect with suitable providers, and build the confidence and skills to coordinate their own supports over time.

A Support Coordinator does not provide direct personal care. Instead, they help you navigate the NDIS, solve problems, understand your options, and make sure your plan is being used in a way that supports your goals.

Think of your Support Coordinator as a guide who helps you turn your NDIS plan into real, practical support.

What Does a Support Coordinator Do?

A Support Coordinator can assist with many different parts of your NDIS journey, including:

  • Explaining your NDIS plan in simple, clear language

  • Helping you understand your funded supports and how they can be used

  • Finding and connecting you with suitable service providers

  • Coordinating communication between providers, families, carers, and the NDIA

  • Helping resolve issues with providers or service delivery

  • Supporting you to prepare for plan reviews with appropriate evidence

  • Assisting during major life changes, such as moving house, changes in health, family breakdown, or hospital discharge

  • Helping you build confidence and skills to manage your own supports over time

The goal is not just to organise services for you, but to support you to have more choice, control, and confidence in your NDIS journey.

The Three Levels of Support Coordination

The NDIS may fund different levels of Support Coordination depending on a participant’s individual needs.

Level 1 - Support Connection

Support Connection provides short-term assistance to help participants connect with providers, community services, and informal supports.

This level is usually suited to participants who are fairly independent but need some initial guidance to get started.

Level 2 - Support Coordination

Support Coordination provides ongoing support to help participants understand and implement their NDIS plan, coordinate providers, manage service agreements, and prepare for future reviews.

This is the most common level of Support Coordination funded in NDIS plans.

Level 3 - Specialist Support Coordination

Specialist Support Coordination is for participants with more complex needs or higher-risk situations.

This may include participants experiencing homelessness, family breakdown, complex mental health needs, hospital discharge, justice involvement, high-risk behaviours, or multiple service systems needing to work together.

Specialist Support Coordinators usually have higher-level experience and qualifications to manage complex circumstances.

At BlueBay Support Coordination, we provide both Level 2 Support Coordination and Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle, the Northern Rivers, and Australia-wide via virtual support.

Support Coordination vs Plan Management

Support Coordination and Plan Management are often confused, but they are very different roles.

A Plan Manager helps manage the financial side of your NDIS plan. They pay invoices, track budgets, and help you understand spending.

A Support Coordinator helps manage the support side of your NDIS plan. They assist with finding providers, coordinating services, resolving issues, and making sure your supports are working toward your goals.

Many participants choose to have both, so their funding and their supports are both being managed effectively.

Who Can Benefit from Support Coordination?

Support Coordination can be helpful for many NDIS participants, especially if you:

  • Are new to the NDIS and feel overwhelmed

  • Have multiple providers involved

  • Have psychosocial, disability, health, housing, or family-related complexities

  • Need help understanding your plan

  • Want to change providers but are unsure where to start

  • Are preparing for a plan review

  • Need support with SIL, SDA, or housing options

  • Feel your current supports are not working well

  • Need help communicating with providers or the NDIA

A good Support Coordinator helps reduce stress and makes sure your plan is being used in a meaningful and practical way.

What a Support Coordinator Should Not Do

A good Support Coordinator should empower you, not control you.

They should not:

  • Make decisions without your input

  • Pressure you to use specific providers

  • Ignore your goals, preferences, or cultural needs

  • Be difficult to contact when support is needed

  • Treat you like just another number

  • Take over your life or remove your choice and control

At BlueBay, we believe Support Coordination should always be person-centred. That means your goals, your voice, and your preferences come first.

How to Choose the Right Support Coordinator

When choosing a Support Coordinator, it is important to look for someone who is experienced, responsive, and genuinely person-centred.

You may want to consider:

  • Whether they are NDIS registered

  • Their experience with your specific needs

  • Their understanding of psychosocial disability, autism, housing, complex health, or family systems

  • Their availability and communication style

  • Whether they offer support in your area or virtually

  • Whether they explain things clearly

  • Whether they respect your choice and control

The right Support Coordinator should make you feel supported, informed, and heard.

Can You Change Support Coordinators?

Yes. You can change your Support Coordinator at any time.

There are no lock-in contracts for Support Coordination. If your current coordinator is not the right fit, you are allowed to move to another provider.

A new Support Coordinator, such as BlueBay, can help manage the transition and communicate with your previous provider where needed.
